Extreme Team: Rebuilding the Spokane HOPE Center

Jun 07, 2023

SPOKANE, Wash. -- This February, the Extreme Team is taking on a new project in Spokane. This time, it's the Spokane HOPE center for children with hearing loss.

Mark Peterson and the rest of the team are looking to expand the center that's given so much to the community.

The school teaches kids language development from birth to five-years-old, just before they hit elementary school.

"They have been our saving grace," said Christine Devlemring, whose son attends Spokane HOPE. "When Finn was diagnosed, we had no idea what to do, we've never even heard of that. It's not something you think of when you're a parent that you're child's going to lose their hearing."

The best thing about the HOPE Center is that it gives parents with a newly-diagnosed deaf child hope.

"We didn't know anybody else, we don't know anybody who's deaf," said Melissa Bonnett, a local mom. "The first deaf people we've met are our children, and we were connected with HOPE school when Harper was six-months old. And it has been a blessing because HOPE school has been very supportive."

So, the Extreme Team will be helping out the HOPE Center by revamping a back room that is mostly used as storage space right now.

The Extreme Team will be rebuilding the walls, ceiling, flooring, and more.

"The timing is amazing, we've outgrown our space," said Danette Driscoll, executive director of the Spokane HOPE Center. What's really imperative for our kids when they're at HOPE is that they have a really quiet learning environment because we're teaching them to make sense of these sounds that are getting to their brain through their devices. And, right now we've got kids packed in there and it gets really loud and really noisy, and they don't get to hear and don't get to learn the way they need to learn."
